Water Availability Engagement - Phase 2
Share your feedback on Water Availability Engagement - Phase 2 in Alberta!
The Ministry of Environment and Protected Areas, the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, and the Ministry of Municipal Affairs is asking for input on proposed amendments to the Water Act. These amendments would improve and enhance the water management system in Alberta and make more water available to use for years to come.
As part of the province’s ongoing work to increase water availability, the government engaged Albertans in phase 1 (fall 2024 to early 2025) to hear ideas on how to strengthen the water management system to enhance availability.
This second phase of the water availability engagement focuses on proposed Water Act amendments and complementary policy to increase the availability of water licences to Alberta municipalities, businesses and agricultural producers, while continuing to protect the environment. It has been suggested that new or updated policies and tools could be used to increase water availability for Albertans and optimize the water management system.
The Government of Alberta is seeking your feedback on the proposed amendments to the Water Act regarding:
Streamlining decision making for water licensing and transfers
Enhancing water use information to support effective and transparent management of water by all users, including licensing and licence transfers
Enabling lower risk inter-basin transfers
Enabling the use of alternative water sources (e.g., rainwater, stormwater, wastewater)
We encourage PLWA members to participate by submitting the survey to share your input on the proposed amendments. The deadline to complete this survey is June 30, 2025. More details can be found on the website. Click here to take the survey.
