Invasive Species
Prevent the Spread
The definition of an invasive species is any organism that is not native to an area, and that has the potential to cause negative effects to the economy, environment and/or human health. The terminology of native, non-native, invasive and noxious are not to be used interchangeably, but instead these define the level of harm to a local environment an organism may pose
It is important to prevent the spread of invasives through following and cooperating with procedures such as Clean Drain Dry, Don’t Let Loose, choosing to plant native species, and participating in local monitoring and removal efforts. Alberta Invasive Species Council is a great resource for identifying invasive species, province wide.
Reporting sightings of invasive species is also important, as it can help understand distribution and spread of species, along with guiding removal efforts if locations are known. Report sightings to the Alberta Invasive Species Council, or you can log onto EDDMapS, to provide the details you have surrounding location, species, and photographs if you have them. Correctly identifying invasive species is important, as each species often has different management methods to effectively control the spread.
