Update - Wednesday Feb. 12:
The ice is measuring over 20 inches thick, and the weather is forecasted to be between -5 and 0 degrees Celsius, which means this event will go ahead as scheduled!!
Some things to note as you prepare for your day of ice fishing fun:
PLWA staff and volunteers will have a registration table set up at the access point in the Summer Village of Poplar Bay (From Highway 771, head east on Township Rd 470 and follow it south as it turns into Poplar Bay Dr.). Keep an eye out for the signs!
Parking in the lot is limited. Larger groups are encouraged to carpool. Please ensure that when parking in the area, you comply with local bylaws. Do not block private driveways and be aware of “No Parking” zones.
This event is being held entirely outdoors, so please remember to dress appropriately for the weather! We recommend dressing in layers, and don’t forget your mittens/gloves, hats, and scarves!
It is important to note that due to weather conditions this winter, the ground is very icy and slippery! Please ensure that you wear footwear with good traction, and if you have ice cleats/grips we encourage you to bring them.
Participants will need to walk out ~600m from the shoreline to the fishing area. Consider bringing a toboggan to help haul out your chairs!
Try ice fishing this Family Day Weekend! The Alberta Conservation Association’s Kids Can Catch program promotes family fun and helps new anglers learn about proper fishing practices. Join the Pigeon Lake Watershed Association at Pigeon Lake Provincial Park for this exciting event. No pre-registration is required.
Fishing rods, tackle, and bait available to borrow
Fish Ambassador volunteers will help new anglers
Learn about Pigeon Lake, conservation, aquatic invasive species, and traditional fishing practices
Enjoy complimentary snacks and refreshments (while supplies last)
Become a PLWA member and be entered to win door prizes with donations from local businesses
Bring your warmest clothes, a camp chair, and your family and friends!
Kids Can Catch is on Alberta’s Family Fishing Weekend, so a fishing license is not required. Fishing regulations still apply.
The Pigeon Lake Skateway is located on the Southwest side of Pigeon Lake and is accessible from the Summer Villages of Poplar Bay and Grandview (https://www.pigeonlakeskateway.com). Look for the PLWA signs out on the ice pointing you to our event.
We are also looking for Fish Ambassador volunteers. Please email gm@plwa.ca if you are willing to share your knowledge or your auger with us.
If temperatures are below -15°C, we will reschedule. Please check this page for updates if temperatures are getting cold. Even if temperatures are warm, please dress properly for this outdoor winter event.
