Clean Runoff Week and Property Assessments
Runoff is the water that enters the lake after flowing over the ground surface, where it accumulates contaminants such as fertilizers, pet waste and pesticides. Development leads to an increase in runoff with excess nutrients (pollutants). This runoff contributes to nutrient loading, which fuels algae blooms and harms water quality.
Clean runoff is about reducing the amount of runoff before it reaches our waterways. This is key to maintaining and improving water quality and health in our lakes, rivers and streams. The Clean Runoff Action Guide can be found on our website. It provides resources for sustainable, resilient and low maintenance landscaping. We encourage you to check out the guide to learn about runoff management and to help keep our waterways healthy.
Another highlight of runoff management is the power of native plants and preserving natural areas. When landscaping your property, you have the power to make design, maintenance and material choices that will both improve water quality and look fantastic. This means moving away from conventional turf and paying more attention to grading and routing water. Landscapes with more biodiversity and native plants are better able to respond to stresses in the environment like floods, periods of drought, and pest outbreaks. They support wildlife, improve air quality and they don’t need fertilizers and pesticides.
One way to support this is by purchasing our Pigeon Lake Native Grass Seed mix. The longer root systems of the native species in the mix clean and filter excess nutrients to support clean runoff and a healthy lake. Order your bag today!
We're also excited to be offering free Clean Runoff Property Assessments on June 27th and June 28th. These assessments provide recommendations to help you reduce runoff and restore natural function on your property. As a thank-you, participants will receive a bundle of native plant plugs valued at $150 to kickstart their clean runoff efforts.
