Lake flies were hatching en masse around Pigeon Lake in 2021, and were observed in record numbers. "This is a wonderful opportunity to see what great biodiversity we have," said Janet Sperling, entomologist and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Alberta, who was quoted in a CBC News article.

The adults live for only a few days, dying shortly after mating. The swarming, which started about 10 days ago, will not likely last for much longer. These observations indicate a clean and healthy lake with abundant biodiversity.

Three hatchings were witnessed with the warm and humid temperatures. Midges were observed in the end of May, mid-July and mid-August.
